To be the best, you need to train like the best. This has now trickled down into the youth sports arena. Gone are the days of two- and three-sport athletes. We are now seeing more and more athletes specializing in one sport at young ages. Which poses a question, does it pay to specialize in youth sports?
What is sports specialization? Research in athletes has not been able to consistently demonstrate that early intense training is essential for attaining elite status down the road with the exception of one sport, gymnastics.
Though in gymnastics, peak performance typically occurs prior to full maturation and requires intense training before puberty. At young ages, the goal of sport participation is to engage children in a new social environment and help them to develop fundamental motor skills required for sport.
By sampling various sports and activities, the young athlete gets more opportunity for involvement both socially and physically. What are the concerns about sports specialization? Overuse injuries occur due to repeated stress to the same muscle, tendon, joint or bone and are more likely to occur during an adolescent growth spurt.
If we constantly have young athletes working on the same skills and the same sport day in and day out, they are more vulnerable to overuse injuries. They are also susceptible to overtraining syndrome and burnout at a young age.
There may come a point when doing the same activity every day is no longer fun and desire to perform decreases. Or the pressure to make a team or attain the next level becomes too much and the child begins to feel stress that they are not performing as well as they should be.
Decreased performance, stress and lack of desire to participate ensue. Studies have shown that sport drop-out rate is substantially higher in young athletes who specialize at an early age prior to years-old. So does it pay for young athletes to specialize?
Recent estimates from the NCAA have shown the percentages of athletes who participate at the high school level that go on to compete in college and professional levels for specific sports: What does he do?
What are his positions? Is he a big hitter in baseball? Is he a pitcher? Does he play hoops? I think that they should play year-round and get every bit of it that they can through that experience. Even [at USC], I want to be the biggest proponent for two-sport athletes on the college level.
